Yesterday Big Head asked what football video game you plan on buying this year, NCAA Football or Madden? I've always been an NCAA guy. Always thought the gameplay was significantly better and that Madden has been extremely overrated for several years now. (I'm not saying that it's still not a pretty solid game, but NCAA has clearly been better for a while IMO.)
But I agree with Big Head that Madden looks pretty sweet this year. For those of you that don't obsess over the minor changes made in these games each year I'll explain some of the new features of each game that you should know about if you're considering buying one of them.
Madden has a new change in the gameplay that is minor but I think is really cool and long overdue. Whenever a player fumbles in the game instead of the ball magically popping into a player's hands, as has been the case in all football games in the past, there will now be a pile for the ball just as there is in real football. While in the pile you will be required to hit the button that flashes on the screen to be able to recover the fumble. The ball can change hands multiple times in the pile. This should simulate much more effectively what an actual fumble is like. If this feature works I'd like to see the NCAA franchise implement it as well.
NCAA '10 is really pimping its Season Showdown feature. You can read about what exactly that is here. I guess it sounds kinda cool, but I'm honestly not that impressed and doubt that I'll really do anything with that.
What I'm excited about is the new team builder feature. You can go here and create your school from scratch. You get to customize everything. Your logo, field, uniform (including everything from the helmets to the shoes). You also get to pick your style of play and edit your roster so you can run the spread, west coast, option, etc. I've decided to have fun with my roster by making my players characters from NBC's "Friday Night Lights." My only complaint is that all of their player images are guys with short haircuts. How am I supposed to duplicate Tim Riggins with the player templates they're giving me? Also, should I put Matt Saracen at QB or move him to WR and roll the dice with freshman phenom JD McCoy?

But once you finish creating your school online you can download it onto your console and play with it online or in dynasty mode. You can also download schools that other users have created. If you'd like to take your chances with the Garrison State Hornets and ride Smash Williams to a National Championship then have at it. Just remember, "Clear eyes, full heart, can't lose!"
