Missouri Tigers assistant coach Melvin Watkins is reportedly interviewing for the head coach position at Appalachian State. Also reportedly interviewing are Citadel coach Ed Conroy and Wake Forest assistant Pat Kelsey. There is also supposably some interest in having former App. State coach, and current Charlotte Bobcats director of player personnel, Buzz Peterson return as coach. Peterson coached at the school in the late 90s and had a very successful run.

In my opinion, Melvin's probably the underdog on that list. Conroy has engineered a startling comeback at the Citadel as chronicled by Mizzou grad Wright Thompson in his E-Ticket piece from this March. And it seems like Peterson would be the first choice if he'd be willing to return considering his history with the program. Plus Watkins doesn't exactly have a great track record as a head coach.

But I would hate to lose Melvin. He is one of the Tigers' lead recruiters and was a stabilizing force through the Quin Snyder saga. That said, the Tigers have not been known for landing high profile recruits over the past few years as evidenced by the Jarrid Famous thing. But Melvin seems like a really cool dude and I wish him the best of luck in the application process
