Late last week Yahoo had an article posted about how Mizzou alum Max Scherzer should be seriously considered for any fantasy leaguers who need an impact SP. The article said that if you had the #1 waiver priority, you should go out and get him (and not wait for a dumbass in your league to drop someone like David Ortiz after a slow start out of the gate - oh wait, that actually happened in one of my leagues). I kind of shrugged it off, because all I had been hearing over the offseason from the prospect experts was that Scherzer is going to be a reliever in the bigs. He still might be, but after putting up huge numbers in the minor leagues, many people were rethinking that bullpen thing.

So a day or two after the Yahoo article, ESPN's top dork, Matthew Berry, shared his thoughts on Scherzer, and also said to burn your waiver claim on Max. To bring a legitimate fantasy baseball voice into the mix, Bertflex's own Turd Ferguson also recommends this idea.

I know Scherzer is good and all but I thought 'let's see how the D-Backs use him first.' Sure enough he was called up on Sunday, and unleashed vs. the mighty Astros Tuesday. Here's how that went:

K, foul out, K, K, K, popout, ground out, K, K , line out, ground out, K, ground out.

That took 47 pitches - 35 for strikes. He hit 98 on the gun.

Sweet Jesus, I'm sold.

Today I burned my #2 waiver priority to nab him, and hope to God that the guy who is #1 doesn't check his team within the next day.

Just a little while ago this evening the Diamondbacks announced that he'll be joining the rotation, which was already pretty damn good. This will be a very exciting rookie to watch throughout the season, hopefully on par with the likes of Yovanni Gallardo and Tim Lincecum last year. With the quick rise of Scherzer, along with the eventual high expectations of Aaron Crow and Kyle Gibson on the Major League level, the Mizzou Tigers are showing that they can crank out some of the top young arms in all of baseball.

And after throwing some wiffleball heat last night, I might check to see if I have any eligibility left.
