It's been a rough couple weeks for Leo Lyons. After a promising start to his senior season he fell back out of favor with Coach Anderson and most Tiger fans after multiple lackluster efforts against the likes of Illinois and Nebraska. Then there was that whole traffic ticket thing that didn't exactly help his cause. But lets not be too harsh on Leo. He seemed to respond pretty well to coming off the bench against Iowa State and had a solid game. And for the most part, he's had a pretty consistent senior season. Easily the best he's had as a Tiger.
The most encouraging thing about his season thus far is that it looks like he's drastically improved one of the weakest parts of his game. Throughout his career he's been harshly criticized by fans and coaches for not being physical enough and playing too much of a finesse game. But this year Leo is drawing 8.4 fouls per 40 minutes. Only one player in the country is getting to the line at a higher rate than Leo. His name? Tyler Hansbrough. Blake Griffin is right behind Lyons in this category.
That stat would seem to indicate that Leo's attacking the basket more and not relying on his jumpshot as much as he has in past years. We need that from Leo. Our halfcourt offense has struggled this year when our pressure defense hasn't forced turnovers. Leo easily has the most developed offense of any player on this team. If the Tigers are going to find ways to score in a halfcourt setting then Leo is going to have to be an integral part of it.
