How awesome is it that the Football school-Basketball school vote came down to one vote? Seriously, a year ago half the people voting had probably forgotten that Mizzou even had a basketball team.

And as close as that vote was, the more likable team debate is even closer. Yesterday I promised you a tiebreaker to determine this thing and so here it is. I decided to take into account each team’s success with you put it in its historical context. So if the football team bottomed out after ’07 or the basketball program collapsed after the recent Elite 8 run, which would be most impressive?

This is entirely my own opinion so feel free to disagree in the comments section but here’s what I think: The more likable team was the ’07 Missouri Tigers football team.

This should not take away anything from the basketball team but as Wolf Stannson pointed out, the fact that the vote was this close only weeks after the basketball team made their run should tell you something (not to mention the fact that Dave MacD was stuffing the ballot).

It’s obvious that we tend to overvalue immediacy. It’s even become cliché to say that we always think the most recent “great” team or game is the greatest but it’s also true.

Fact of the matter is, the football team got a little bit closer to a National Championship than the basketball team did and they did it with just as much class and charisma. And while a lot of people had high expectations for that football season, I don’t think anyone expected this:

Sure, DeMarre Carroll made an appearance on Sports Illustrated’s regional March Madness cover:

But Chase Daniel & Co. were, at least briefly, on top of the college football universe. And that’s why I’m giving them the slight edge over the basketball team.

But honestly, who cares? This is all for fun and both teams gave us wildly entertaining moments. And while both teams left us wanting just a little bit more, when all was said and done all we could do was salute the effort they had put forth (that wasn’t really the case with Quin’s Elite 8 team and even some of Norm’s better teams that flamed out far too early in March).

So here’s to the Chases, T. Rucker, J-Mac, Willy Mo, Pig, Zo, Helicopter, Tony Bowl Game and the rest of the ’07 Tigers.

And here’s to JYD, Matty Ice, Leo, Kimmeh, Big Shot Za, J.T., the SWAT brothers, Marcus Denmon, the MAJic Man and the rest of the 08-09 Tigers.

MizzouRah!
