I will preface this by saying I am a Cardinals fan, but living in Omaha for three years, I got my fill of Royals baseball. The movers and shakers in that organization pissed the bed time after time for many years, from having a minor league park to the Alex Gordon debacle. The Royals seemed to hate their fans after rushing Gordon through the minors when he obviously wasn't ready, even skipping the Lincoln, Nebraska native's own homecoming at the Triple-A level in Omaha. Gordon even had his own misspelled bobblehead ("Gordn") given out for a team that he never played for. That pretty much summed up the Royals for several years.I can say that I never thought it would happen, but things have changed at the Truman Sports Complex.
First, the Royals have put together one of the nicer stadiums by modifying The K, a stadium that is has become a must see. Now, the Royals made the steal of the draft in nabbing ex-Mizzou pitcher Aaron Crow. Crow will probably start off at Single-A's Burlington Bees, but considering he is experienced with college and some in Indy League ball, Crow will be fast tracked through the Royals minor leagues, if he's ready, which he's shown nothing to say that he won't. It'll all come down to if Crow signs fairly quickly, and he has less options than Monday night TV, so this should start pretty quick. Oh, and the Royals have something on their side for signability.
"I was excited," Crow said. "I've been a Royals fan my whole life. I was always a fan. It was tough sometimes when things weren't going well, but I always stuck with them."
As a side note, I'm excited by the Cards 1st round pick of Shelby Miller, who was probably the fifth best talent in the entire draft. Then again, high school pitchers are harder to project than when a sack of White Castle's will wreck your body. Sure, he could turn out to be a #1 or #2 starter, and the Cardinals had to take the risk considering all they've drafted lately is college kids other than Pete Kozma, but Miller won't see Busch Stadium for probably five years, where Crow has a shot to be in Triple-A ball by the end of the year if things go right, and could be in the Royals rotation by next year. Major props to Dayton Moore.
--Added-- Someone wanted proof of the "Gordn" bobblehead. Peep the one on the right below.
