Sorry for the delayed posting of my Post-game Thoughts. Had company this week and had tickets to the Chiefs’ home opener against the Raidas. And after that I had to spend all of last night watching old Derrick Thomas highlight videos just to keep myself from falling even deeper into depression. I didn’t even give up on the Chiefs this quickly when Herm was coaching the team. But anyways, onto Furman.

  • A little concerned that D-Wash wasn’t able to get going on Saturday. Not sure if that’s an issue with the O-line or Washington. Dave Matter had a quote from Washington saying he had trouble getting his footwork down against Illinois and that might have been what plagued him against the Paladins. We’re gonna need him to get that figured out by the time Nebraska comes to town. Preferably by the time the Tigers board the plane to Reno. While Washington struggled Kendial Lawrence continued to impress. This guy is rapidly emerging as one of my favorite Tigers in the post-Daniel era. Him and…
  • ALDON SMITH!!! I know he didn’t get a sack yesterday, which is the first time that’s happened in his college career, but it seemed like he was in the backfield on every single play and tipped several passes. I really think in another year A. Smith might be the star of this football team. As a long-time drinker of Colt 45 and a huge Lando Calrissian fan, I cannot express how pumped I was to find out the Tigers have a play named after Billy Dee’s beverage of choice. It also led to my all-time favorite Dave Matter lede: “Missouri receiver Danario Alexander has been waiting weeks, years actually, to taste Colt 45.” Fantastic.
  • On a related note, I think David Yost is going to produce way more interesting quotes than we’re used to from football coaches. Every time I read something from him I learn something about football. Seems to always say something other than the boring, packaged clichés most coaches use. His explanation of the pass to Jerrell Jackson pass that preceded the Tigers cracking open a Colt 45 was incredibly insightful.
  • Blaine Gabbert looked outstanding once again although it’s hard to judge anyone’s performance against a team like Furman. I kinda thought he forced more throws this week than he did against Bowling Green but maybe he actually needs to take more chances. That might have been part of his problem in the first half last week. Not sure. Not to repeatedly compare him to his predecessors but through three games his numbers are clearly better than Brad Smith’s and Chase Daniel’s were.
  • Shakespeare’s Pizza Playa of the Game: Jared Perry. JP had a career day in the first quarter of this thing so it was an obvious choice. He was also the benefactor of that fine malt liquor/football play that works every time. And no I’m not planning on stopping the Colt 45 references anytime soon. While we’re at it can Coach Pinkel rename all his plays after cheap malt liquors? I’d love to hear Gabbert call out “Cammo Black Ice!” and “Olde English 800!” OK, I’m off track. Grab a slice JP. Honorable mentions to Gabbert and Super Danario.
  • I’m feeling better and better about Mizzou’s chances of winning the North. Even though kU eventually handled Duke I still thought they struggled way more than they should have. (Although I’m not actually sure how much better Bowling Green is than Duke.) Watching that game it seemed like Reesing was constantly being pressured by the Blue Devils. If Shane Battier and Trajon Langdon are able to get past that beaker O-line what do you think Agents Smith and Coultergeist are gonna do? Also encouraging to see Texas Tech still looking solid. That’s one of those toss up games that would be huge for the Tigers if kU would lose.
  • Nebraska’s absolutely heartbreaking loss completed a great college football weekend. But I was still impressed that the Cornholers were able to play them that tough. But is it me or does Virginia Tech just look terrible even when they win? Frank Beamer’s team usually gets the job done but damn do they look bad doing it. But it looks like the Huskers definitely have themselves a quarterback in Zac Lee. And yes I’m being completely sarcastic.
  • Tigers get their Friday Night Lights on in Reno this week against a Nevada team that has been very unimpressive so far this year. This could be seen as a must-win for the Wolfpack and the Tigers really need to close out the non-con portion of their schedule undefeated so they have that momentum going into Nebraska week.
