Abridged Morning After E-mail

I can't sleep, and thanks to some dumbass Bloguin fault, the original copy of this was erased when I was ready to publish. I'll give the uber-abridged version after spending the last hour on the original 27-12 Husker win post.

-Horrible calls going both ways. Still trying to figure out Suh's hands to the face call or whatever.

-Blaine looked like garbage. Maybe it was good to get this out of the way. Wish it wasn't this game, but it was bound to happen.

-DWash had a pretty solid game.

-Defense looked good, minus the long TD. They were backed up big time with the Suh interception. D-Ends especially. A hell of a game.

-Suh is a beast. Glad not to see him again. Helu is gone as well. He'll be running on Sundays next year barring an injury.

-Lots of injuries for Mizzou, but none look too serious.

-Will Ebner. Ballhawk.

-Too many holding penalties killed off drives. Stupid penalties at that.

-Helu is a good back, and was held in check for the most part. His garbage TD/yards aside, nice job.

-Jake Harry could kick a cinder-block 50yds into the wind barefoot. Shakespeare's Pizza Playa of the Game.

-Huskers survived, and Mizzou decided not to close. An ugly, ugly loss. Just as ugly of a win for Nebraska. Nebraska made less mistakes, and Mizzou unloaded a few clips into their own foot. Less mistakes will always mean a win.

-Classiest fans in football like to hit opponent's blogs at 1:30a after a win. How fucking tacky? I say this fully knowing that none of our usual (and good) Husker fans were a part of it. The random Internet Heroes that the Huskers have may be worse than kU fans, and that says a lot.

-I just got called for holding, again.

-Our backups in the secondary are so damn confused. Every time, every game. I'm tired of it. Shit is old. If they don't know coverage, don't play them.

-This game mattered more for the Huskers with their horrendous schedule. Oklahoma, TTech, and a trips to Larryville and Boulder for their "rivalry". The Huskers aren't a really good team, and will lose some games, which opens the door. Mizzou's schedule is looking better with Dez Bryant done for next week's Okie State game, which is winnable, Texas coming to CoMo, and the 50/50 Arrowhead for the kU game. Mizzou isn't out of it by any means. This B12 conference is crazy this year. Nobody has stood out. I feel dirty for mentioning it, but I may have to root for kU against the Huskers. Gross. I was trying to avoid that with a win Thursday.

Okie State next week. It's a winnable game with Bryant out, unless we show up the same way we did Thursday. I never want to see us play like this again. Ever.

Truly a horrible display...
written by Hiphopopotamus, October 09, 2009
I'm not sure whether or not to be happy or sad, because that was just pitiful. My worry is that I haven't seen anything from us to make me believe we're markedly better than either team. Except Todd, we do have Todd.

The Huskers aren't really a good team? Sounds more like sour grapes more than anything else, especially since the Nebraska defense manhandled Mizzou all night.

Once the rain let up, that's when both teams were finally able to move the ball. Problem is, Nebraska was able to accomplish more with their offense than Mizzou was, and Zac Lee finally snapped out of his road funk and put it together.

Maybe Mizzou will have better luck next year, but I doubt it. It wasn't just Suh that manhandled Mizzou--it was the entire defense. 90% of that defense comes back next year (including Crick, who was in Blaine's face as much as Suh last night), and the offense will only get better.

It looks like the window of opportunity just slammed shut for Mizzou while they had their hands on the sill.
Good game
written by Mr. Bump, October 09, 2009
Neither team can be judged as good or bad in those conditions. And if I hear another F'n KU fan say that both teams are horrible I'm going to choke them.

Good game. It came down to whose QB made the least amount of mistakes. As it usually does.

@Bump: Neither team is horrible, but both of them played horribly for most of the game. Turned into a field position game. The Huskers showed nothing, outside the Paul catch, to move the ball down the field. When you have the ball inside the redzone as it was after the two picks, you're supposed to pound it in, and they did. 18yd and 10yd drives.

It's a big 'if', but if you move either of those drives back to even the 40, does a TD happen? Again, the only offensive play the Huskers had was the Paul catch. Maybe it happens, maybe not. I thought someone was going to pick off that duck Lee threw to McNeill. Guess everyone was in his face.

Both teams moved the ball a little bit late, and Blaine had the balls to take some shots after throwing the two picks. I wasn't impressed with either team, but the Huskers took advantage of turnovers, and turnovers that happen inside the redzone to give great field position.

It's still the first conference game, and the Huskers have the worst schedule out of Nebraska, kU, and Mizzou. If Mizzou can pull it out next week, I'll take this loss.

And the Huskers are not a really good team or unbeatable. They did everything to lose, only to have a team play even worse. So, yeah, they did played better than Mizzou in the 4th, which doesn't say much. Lee came alive when needed. Both Mizzou and Nebraska will improve, but I wish next year's game was in CoMo. I think those are the two teams you'll see battling for the next few years as kU rebuilds post-Todd. They do have Opurum, so maybe kU is starting to go places.
My take
written by Husker_Engineer, October 09, 2009
@Head:

I was up with one of the babies last night...and almost posted until I saw the comments...and then I walked away slowly.

My post-game take is this:

1. Your front 7 on D is better and faster than I gave them credit for.

2. Our front 4 on D is pretty damn good and that part of the game went according to how I thought it would. I suspected that if we pressured Gabbert with just 4, it would be a long night for him. And it was.

3. Your punter is nails.

4. Our long snapper is not.

5. Roy will not be in the NFL next year. I won't go into a long explanation about why. But he will be here next year.

6. You guys are not out of it, but don't expect NU to make it easy. We have, IMO, at most 2 losses from here on out (OU and *maybe* KU), which means you have to win out and hope KU stumbles.

In closing, you guys know me well enough to know I am not one of those 'Order Restored' drones. Reason being that I recognize that the landscape is much different. Mizzou and KU (to some extent) have made a commitment to football and will be factors for the foreseeable future. I think those on your side of the fence who have proclaimed our demise after the last few seasons are equally as wrong. You might not like or respect him, but Bo is the right man at NU.

It is my belief that the Victory Bell will go to the B12N champ each and every year for the foreseeable future...and that neither one of us will own it for more than a few years at a time.
Schedules...
written by Hiphopopotamus, October 09, 2009
Big Head: You're crazy if you think Nebraska's schedule is tougher than KU's.

KU's south schedule: OU, @ Tech, @ Texas
NU's south schedule: OU, Tech, @ Baylor

The only advantage KU has is that they play NU in Lawrence, but that doesn't make up for the southern difference.
Oh yea...

Do they sell waterproof paint in Columbia?

And please God let me find a screen cap of the Mizzou fan in the Gold Latex body suit. I saw that guy and thought, "Bring out the gimp". All he needed was a red rubber ball in his mouth.
...
written by Big Head, October 09, 2009
@Engineer: Gotta agree with every point except your Helu. I'm glad Suh is gone. I still think TTech could torch you guys. They are better than what I thought. They've looked like the 2nd best team in the South right now. I thought they would finish 4th at best.

I'm trying to figure how Helu stays? He's got to be a top two round pick right now, and a shot to the knees could ruin a career that never begins.

@HipHop: I've seen crazy things happen in Boulder with Nebraska, but I can see both teams (hell, all three) going 1-2 in their south games. The big game happens when Nebraska goes to Lawrence. Mizzou has the best shot at 2-1, and it'd take some of the pressure off of this loss if we win next week in Stillwater.
Gotta say...

and I saw this over at OrBK, but how much gum does Bo go through a game? Huskers have endorsement deals with Adidas, Gatorade, and Bazooka Joe?
...
written by Husker_Engineer, October 09, 2009
Tom used to go through like 4 packs of, no shit, Big Red every game.

The only way you guys sneak back in is if Tech beats us and you run the table. We will beat KSU, Baylor, and ISU, and CU....by a lot.

Roy found the Jesus. We have a lot of guys coming back on offense next year. Trust me, he is playing on Saturday next fall.
Sour Grapes

Come'on Big Head...I read your blog frequently as it appears that the Double Extra Point guys have a decent relationship with you. Most of stuff I read leading up to games is good, but you throw a lot of garbage out there like a good homer blog should. Just realize: When you pull those shots, they're going to come back to haunt you when the other team wins...especially in a 4th quarter rally fashion.

I fired a couple shots last night...copy/pasting some of your own analysis that was incorrect...and I don't think that's "unclassy". Asking what Tyler Gabbert thought about Pinkel's QB sneak call when his brother's ankle was already shaky isn't "unclassy". When you're wrong, you're wrong....and you my friend, were wrong.

Pulling down all of the comments from last night was pretty weak as well.

Right now, you're acting like the kid that got his A kicked on the playground and is going around saying that the other kid isn't that tough. The better team won last night. Our defense dominated. Our offense did enough. Keep in mind, Helu was no where near 100%.

Nebraska's offense was faced with:

.Thursday night road game in Columbia
.Our starting RB is sick (Helu) his backup is a true freshman (Burkhead)
.1st year QB (Lee)
.Driving rain

Shawn Watson (OC) had his hands full with gameplanning...our plan was to keep the ball in the air because of the circumstances. Give me a day where Helu's healthy and I think we beat you guys from the starting whistle and a lot worse than 15 points. Anyway, keep winning the rest of your games...we're gonna need the strength of schedule for the BCS.

I think we get those four W's as well. Throw in Baylor for both of us as W's too in my opinion. kU is a HUGE game for both Mizzou and Nebraska (very happy you guys go there and we do Camerohead).

Is Okie State winnable for us? If we play the way we usually do, yes. If we show up the way we played last night, you might mark off that Baylor W.

Sucks the weather was involved the way it was, but both teams had it...can't complain. I was surprised by the lack of Helu and giving the ball to Zac Lee to win or lose it. Helu is a proven commodity, and outside of the Paul pass, Lee did nothing but not lose it. That's all he needed to do last night, and he did. Think Helu was really sick?

Pulling down comments that made nothing but attacks and making yourselves look bad at 2a on an opponent's blog after a win is weak?

Dude, come on. I probably did you a favor. You guys looked pathetic this morning, dicking around here instead of celebrating a B12 win with Husker fans. I don't think anyone coming around looking for analysis on a game wants to go through a "You can fucking suck my nuts!" comments for the most part. There were only a few people that understood that this game was just ugly for both teams. 'The classiest fans' hanging out on an opponent's site is what you want me to post? Uh, huh.
Favor?
written by BackToNormal, October 09, 2009
Don't act like you did me a favor, Kim Jong-iL. Although there are idiots in every fan base, pulling down comments shreads YOUR credibility exponentially.

The last thing that I'll ever believe is a blogger from the opposing team that just got beat is trying to do the winning team a favor.

@BackToNormal: Not a problem. I'll show your "Classiest Fans" with their own post. Check back in about 15mins.

The game was ugly for both teams. I'm not going to tear Nebraska apart but I don't think they really showed their quality last night and there are a lot of issues they need to work out on special teams.

Missouri's offense played exactly how I expected them to: o-line getting manhandled vs. a bunch of guys trying to earn their black shirts back. Gabbert played just like a redshirt sophomore...which he is. Missouri's receivers never figured out that they needed to break off routes and come back to Gabbert when the pocket collapsed because Gabbert was hurting. The secondary played well most of the night but when they got burned, they got burned big.

And like I said very early in the game on RMN's live thread: Penalties are going to kill us. And they did.
Wah!Wah!Wah!!!!
written by Bobigred, October 09, 2009
You guys think that this is a hard loss? you had the entire fourth quarter to realize you were gonna lose...It wasnt a heart breaker. It was a switch of momentum, not luck.

If you wanna see a heart breaker, watch the Virginia Tech Nebraska game. We outplayed them the whole game (not just the first 3 quarters) and then they threw a bomb on a blown coverage assignment and won the game with a couple seconds...We would be top 10 if we could have finished it off.

Quit complaining about this game. Nebraska won fair and square because they played hard in the fourth quarter......and Suh is a beast and a half
it is what it is
written by scott6, October 09, 2009
It was an ugly game. Penalties. Turnovers. Two good teams. Nebraska made the plays when they had to and Missouri didn't. End of story. This isn't hard to figure out. It was a physical game and both defenses came to play, NU just made more plays when it mattered. NU shot themselves in the foot just as much as MU did...so stop saying you beat yourselves.

Missouri is a talented team but so is NU. Congrats to the Huskers for the victory and good luck to the Tigers the rest of the way.
...
written by Big Head, October 09, 2009
@Bobigred: Or the flea kicker. Or the 5th down. Don't tell me about 'hard losses'. Remember, this is a Mizzou blog. We've owned the trademark on 'hard losses'. And where was the complaining? Please, point it out. I have a feeling you're another Nub not reading the post.

@BTN: Your post is ready. http://mizzourahblog.com/2009-...-fans.html Yeah, I like DXP. Did they have VTech fans crashing the site after getting the rug pulled out? Nope. There are dipshit fans in every circuit...just seems to be more with the Huskers. After the Armageddon loss last year, kU fans had nothing to say other than it was a hell of a game, and they are our bitter rival. Sooners games over the past few years? Same thing.

I've only been following these sports blogs for a couple of years now and I'm beginning to agree with you. We do have some d-bag fans. Its one thing to bash your foe on your own blog or message board but to go to enemy territory and do it is just dumb.
...
written by Big Head, October 09, 2009
@Bump- there is a difference with being conversational in enemy territory and being confrontational. I've disagreed with you before, but it doesn't come down to "You're a dickhead, and I'm right.". You've stated your case, and it's the way to go at it.

BTW- Not sure if you're a Corn Nation'er, but we have our own resident dumbass somewhere.

Head - I know you had to have a tongue in cheek in there when you said Missouri has a better chance than Nebraska at going 2-1 vs. the South. You really think Texas Tech will beat us in Lincoln? Did you catch that game last week vs. New Mexico? Did you catch that NU game last year in Lubbock? Dude. No way. And don't assume Oklahoma is going to come into Lincoln and roll us. Our defense is much better than your giving them credit for.
...
written by Big Head, October 09, 2009
@Sammy-TTech may be the 2nd best team in the south right now. You know they didn't have Potts last week for most of the game, right? Tech throws the ball all over, and if the weather is ok, that won't change. Their D is iffy, but that offense isn't to be messed with. I think you'll get rolled vs Oklahoma, and we should both beat Baylor. Baylor missing RGIII has a lot of impact on the B12N.

OSU is missing Dez Bryant, and Kendall Hunter is banged up (should play tomorrow I believe). Perrish Cox is beat up as well. They haven't been as impressive as expected. Texas is a top team, and of course, we have Baylor too.

I say a banged up/suspended OSU team on the road should be easier than TTech at home. If Bryant and Hunter both play, it'll be tougher. Just a feeling that we are in that game. A lot will be figured out tomorrow vs ATM for those guys. That could be an upset.

TTech, nor OSU will be a cakewalk for either team.
...
written by SammyVegas, October 10, 2009
I'd agree neither will be a cake walk by any means. Getting Tech at home is a good break for us. For your sake, hopefully Gabbert learned from the NU game because OSU will be a big test on the road with their speed. It'll be interesting to see what happens to that offense w/o Bryant.

Still, OU is the second best team in the South right now and there's no close 3rd. Tech isn't that good - when I talked about the New Mexico game, the 0-5 Lobos had 431 yards of offense and put up 28 points. I'm not counting them out in Lincoln, but I'd play that game anyday over your game in Stillwater with or without Bryant.
...
written by SammyVegas, October 10, 2009
And also, have you seen OU's offensive line this year? 4 new starters that have been atrocious. I don't think Miami's d-line is much better - if at all - then ours.
