Tigers May Get Snubbed to the Texas Bowl E-mail

In what's become the latest of great Tigerboard meltdowns, the Trib's Mizzou guru, Dave Matter, says the Tigers may get snubbed by the Insight Bowl selection committee in favor of Iowa freakin' State.

[...] Insight Bowl spokesman Tony Alba confirmed on Wednesday that Missouri and Iowa State are “squarely in the middle our picture,” though no final decision will be made by the bowl’s selection committee until a conference call on Sunday, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST, Alba said.

Yep, Iowa fucking State. Despite the 8-4 record and the head to head win. Iowa State. Despite having two major cities and airports with non-stop flights to Phoenix and attendance almost doubling Iowa State, Iowa State may go to the Insight, which would more than likely relegate Mizzou to the Texas Bowl against Navy, who's already committed to the bowl. That isn't horrible. Why you may ask?

1). The Big 12 pools all bowl money. Mizzou loses out on ZERO cash overall.

2). Mizzou recruits Texas like crazy. The Texas Bowl is in Houston. Yeah, that could work out ok, especially for Texas alums.

3). It's a national broadcast on ESPN, not the NFL Network.

4). Like the Insight, it's another 'stand alone bowl' (ie Nobody else is playing at that time). 2:30p central on New Year's Eve.

I wouldn't mind the Texas Bowl. Going to the Insight over Texas doesn't really get us anymore respect since most people won't even realize that the Insight is a step up. Hell, if we get the Texas Bowl I'll be going to that game.

Yeah I don't mind this. In principle it's annoying and the opponent isn't as respected, but I think being on real TV instead of NFL Network is more important.

we lose about $500,000 in traveling expenses

"Missouri estimates that it would receive $1,349,500 designated for traveling expenses for playing in the Insight, compared to just $877,100 for the Texas Bowl"
The money...

that is travel expenses, which is basically "does the band need a fundraiser or not?".

Those four reasons seem like a battered wife telling her friend why she won't leave her husband. "He really loves me!" Its about respect. MU is getting the screws put to it again on a bowl if this happens.

I wonder what the ratings are for bowl games during the afternoon on a week day when everyone is working vs a game on the NFL network that not everyone gets?

@Sammy- thanks for the reminder that we have the best WR in the land.

@Bump- Gotta think that the Texas Bowl will have higher ratings. It is on ESPN, which is on any basic cable, as opposed to the NFL Network, which is available on DTv and Dish automatically and is mostly on an expanded cable package (if it's even offered).

Ahhh....Mizzou and ISU fighting over who gets to go to the least crappy bowl. Now that takes me back..

Having said that, I am glad we played you guys at the start of conference play and not at the end.

@SV-How does that pic have anything to do with the discussion? I don't think anyone was trying to argue Mizzou deserved to go to a better bowl than Nebraska. I don't even think Nebraska was in the discussion. So thanks for that.
I'm glad I had the net streaming my ISU/Nub game.

TS - I know you're brighter than that but if not....- then out of 1,000,000 iowa state pictures you can dig up on the internet, Big Head freeze frames a picture of the Iowa State/Nebraska score from a live stream. Where do you think he got that from? Google? Hey, I applaud his effort though, I'm guilty as charged.

I'd still find it very hard to believe the Insight would pass on Missouri for Iowa State right now. Isn't Navy going to the Texas Bowl and isn't that payout over half a million less? Throw the tv argument out, you should want to play in the Insight vs. Minnesota.

Actually...

I took the picture myself (peep the FS logo). Was at the station watching on one of our TV plug-ins with a camera. Figured it was ISU's "big win" everyone is talking about, but yeah, I had to post it.

I want the Texas Bowl a hell of a lot more than the Insight with the recruiting stuff I've figured out. Post coming tomorrow morning.
