Texas Bowl Me, Please! E-mail

We've touched on a few positives with Mizzou going to the Texas Bowl over the Insight Bowl.

1). Location in Houston in one of the best NFL stadiums. Alumni and recruits love this. More on this in a minute.

2). ESPN over NFL Network. Yeah, I'll roll with ESPN each and every time.

3). Both are stand-alone bowls. Nobody else is playing during that time.

4). Better opponent. Navy is 8-4 going in to the Army game, and is nationally known. Minnesota is a program at 6-6 that nobody outside of the frozen lakes really cares about.

Back to the recruiting, and really the #1 reason I love the Texas Bowl over the Insight: Gary Pinkel can bring recruits in for an unofficial visit to bowl practices. With the talented recruiting base in Texas, most, if not all, regional recruits will be at Reliant Stadium, one of the NFL's best stadiums, to check out Mizzou's practices. Of course, no one can schedule an 'official visit' to the bowl game (they can buy tickets and watch), but bringing a recruit in to an NFL palace to check out your bowl team has to have a big 'sold' sign all over it. You have to think- there is no school going on on New Year's, or even that week before, so the practices should be full of recruits.

How many recruits would we have in Phoenix? Answer: None. Texas? Yeah, a hell of a lot.

SOLD.

Navy is nationally known? It's the year 2009...sorry.

"But he really does love me." Battered wife syndrome.

The only people that sit down to watch a Navy game are people from Annapolis or their opponents, which are a who's who of nobodies. La. Tech, W. Kentucky, Air Force, Rice, SMU, Temple, Delaware and Hawaii.

Can't wait to hear how many a "hell of a lot" is for unofficial visits show up for a practice.

fuck...

Exactly how many recruits are you planning on landing because you are in the Texas Bowl vs. Navy?

Besides the monetary issue, I think you guys would destroy Minnesota while I wouldn't want anything to do with that triple option.

I will say that I think it sends out a bad message for the Insight Bowl to take a 6-6 Iowa State over a 8-4 Missouri especially when you beat them head to head. The Big 12 officials are not going to be happy if this happens and I'm still not sold it's going to.

@kjm: A program that's gone to several bowls lately (Navy) and has a wider viewership than just Minnesota/Wisky/North Dakota?. Outside of the B10 Network that almost nobody has, Navy is still on TV more often than Minny. I've probably seen three or four of their games, not counting the Army game in a couple of weeks.

@Bump: Rough list- James Franklin, Bud Sasser, Tristan Holt, Henry Josey, Jared Parham, Mitch Morse, Braylon Webb, Eric Waters, Dan Jenkins' brother, and I imagine there are a few more. Josh Henson was a big time LSU recruiter that came up to CoMo. This is his shot to bring in recruits.

Can you imagine being a 17yr old and you're invited to a NFL stadium to check things out?
The one thing with your recruit list

I'm too lazy to do research, but how many of those kids are from the Houston area? I don't think a lot of kids would make a trip across Texas to go to a bowl game and then miss out on New Year's Eve with their friends. I'd also point out that most of the Texas kids have probably been to a pro football stadium and checked things out.

Also, Minny will be on ESPN 4 times (not including the bowl game), ESPN2 2 times and ABC once.
Navy has been on ESPNU once, NBC once and ESPN once.

Add in Navy's CBS game next Saturday too, but I just can't recall seeing Minny outside of the Wisconsin and Iowa games. My bad.

Remember- these kids are out of school for the week as well. They'll have time to make it back home before school starts. Not sure on the school schedules, but since the Texas Bowl is on a Thursday, they'll have until Sunday to get back home. And if the guys have been to an NFL stadium, they didn't have an offer on the table to play for the team on the field next year (and if they did have an offer, does Rivals rank them as 8-star players?).
Also, this is weird

Navy still has the Army game 12/12, a week AFTER the bowl is announced. Mizzou will have another week to prep since Navy will be getting ready for Army next week.

I see why Army/Navy moved to that weekend, but it really screws some teams. Army is bowl eligible with a win, and they'll most likely bump Marshall out of the bowl according to Graham Watson. So Marshall could be announced as going to a bowl Sunday, then next Saturday, they aren't.
my point wasn't about school

it was about New Years Eve. That was a big deal in high school going out with your friends.

If I believed that recruiting violations didn't occurr I would believe that it was a big deal to them. However, being the cynic that I am I will stand by my statement that big time Texas recruits have been granted access to NFL stadiums. Plus aren't some of the State Championships played in NFL stadiums? (I know in Missouri they are).

I was just dicking around with the "Rivals 8 star" thing. And true, a lot of state title games are in pro stadiums. Texas used to be at the old Cowboys Stadium. Not sure where now.
I should also point out

that I really enjoy this website and come here all the time.
I'm pretty sure Brian Coulter

was an 8-star, I read that on tigerboard, so you know it's true.

@MIZ: Coulter is who every NFL player is based against.
Stop being so passive and agreable to being snubbed

We play far too many games in Texas, as is (3 last year, at least two next year). The players want to travel to fun destinations. They don't want to be grounded at home in their backyard all the time. The idea that so many want to roll over let the conference and the bowls walk all over MU infuriates me.
I'm with the last poster...

this is NOT a good thing for Missouri and no amount of rationalization can make it so. As someone whose team is home for the holidays, I'd of course like to be in any bowl, but getting passed over for a 6-6 Iowa State team is a big slap in the dick.

And worse than that, this is really starting to become a pattern. The previous two years were defensible, but what happens when there's a debate about a bowl you actually want to go to (say, Holiday)...what will Alden have to stand on in negotiations if in the past, his fan base has continually been passed over and only moderately attended the more regional games.
